90-Year-Old WWII Vet Takes Another Big Jump At Rocky Mountain Airshow
BROOMFIELD, Colo. (CBS4) - Seventy years after he landed on Iwo Jima a World War II veteran made another daring jump.
Don Whipple celebrated his 90th birthday by parachuting out of a plane at the Rocky Mountain Airshow. He had enlisted in the Marines when he was 17 years old and was wounded by a mortar shell after landing on Iwo Jima.
He recovered on the temporary hospital ship and then made his way back to the island and eventually to Nagasaki three weeks after the nuclear bomb dropped.
Whipple became a missionary after the war.
