Firefighters Battle 2-Alarm Apartment Fire In Littleton
LITTLETON, Colo. (CBS4)- Firefighters battled an apartment fire in Littleton on Saturday evening that started inside an apartment where a man was moving in.
Crews from West Metro Fire Rescue rushed to the apartment complex on West Cross Drive just after 5 p.m. Saturday on reports of a fire.
When they arrived flames were shooting from the roof of one of the buildings. The fire was quickly categorized as a two-alarm fire.
The fire started on a second-floor balcony of building number 17. The resident was moving into the apartment and was taking a nap when the fire started.
Neighbors smelled smoke and rushed to the apartment, broke down the door and woke up the man who was sleeping. They tried to put out the fire but couldn't.
Firefighters said two apartments were destroyed in the fire, the one where the fire started and the one next door. Some residents were displaced for the night.
"We believe it started in one apartment, got up in to the attic and then spread from there and because it got up into the attic it made the building structurally unsound," said West Metro Fire spokeswoman Rhonda Scholting.
The building was considered structurally unsound and firefighters cannot get inside to determine what started the fire.
