Boys & Girls Clubs Bridge Gap Of Learning Loss During Summer

DENVER (CBS4) Summer fun at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver includes video games, but these games come with math problems and literacy lessons.

"Being able to be a year-round program with Boys & Girls Clubs, we work with them during the school year, after school, but then we stay connected with them throughout the summer," said Travis Stealy, site director for the Noel Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver.

The summer months also allow for new opportunities. Areyana, 14, took part in a new Pathways to Success program that had her looking at future career opportunities.

"It was interesting because we got to go different places and experience different things that we might not have knew about before," Areyana told CBS4.

For 6-weeks, 27 middle and high school students got to explore different career paths.

"We did a technology week focusing on STEM and the kids actually did a hands-on every day," Stealy told CBS4.

Areyana found her passion in the kitchen.

"The culinary week, where we got to go to Johnson & Wales and Miller Farms, and to learn more about getting into cooking colleges and art colleges like that," Areyana explained.

Now as she starts her freshman year, she has a new approach to the new school year.

"I know that I should try to be more involved when I'm in high school because it gives me a better chance of getting into the better colleges," Areyana said.
