Theft Suspect Drops Grenade While Running From Police

PUEBLO, Colo. (CBS4)- A theft suspect dropped a grenade while running from police in Pueblo early Thursday morning.

A bomb squad was called in to examine the explosive device near the area of Prairie and Tucci in Pueblo where police had cordoned off the area. Crews safely removed the grenade.

Although authorities initially believed the grenade was live, the Pueblo Metro Bomb Squad x-rayed the device and found it had no explosive charge.

Pueblo Police Sgt. Eric Gonzales said the situation started out as an attempted vehicle theft on the city's south side but it's not clear whether the suspect was breaking into the vehicle or trying to steal it.

"Officers responded and found someone running from the scene," said Gonzales.

As officers chased after the suspect, he dropped an object that looked similar to a grenade.

The suspect was arrested. His name has not been released. No one was hurt.

This is the third grenade found in Colorado in three days. The Boulder County Sheriff's Office says Stearns Lake in Boulder County is closed to the public after the second grenade was found at the lake on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Raechel Wine and her fiance Anthony Perkins had been fishing at the lake when Perkins literally tripped over the grenade. Crews planned a search of the lake on Thursday. It remains closed until further notice.
