2nd Grenade Found At Stearns Lake, Off Limits To Public

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- A second grenade was found at Stearns Lake in Boulder County just one day after a man literally tripped over a live grenade at the lake.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office has placed the popular area off limits to the public until further notice.

"We will be closing the lake and doing some checking around the area, probably with metal detectors," said Boulder County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Heidi Prentup.

Investigators are concerned with how the grenades made it to the popular recreation area and the possibility that there may be more. Crews planned to search the area for more grenades on Thursday.

The bomb squad detonated the second grenade found on Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, Raechel Wine and her fiance, Anthony Perkins, had just finished an afternoon of fishing at Stearns Lake northwest of Broomfield and were starting to head home when they discovered the grenade which looked eerily authentic.

"We were walking along the bank and Anthony was taking a step and he tripped over something and he looked down," said Wine.

It was a World War II era grenade. The device found by a ranger on Thursday was not quite as old.

"A hand grenade that our bomb squad has said was manufactured a little bit later," said Prentup.

Investigators believe the grenades likely washed ashore as the lake water receded.

"Looks like they've been there a long time, they're rusted, have been under the water," said Prentup.

No one was hurt.
