DENVER (CBS4)– The driver police believe caused a deadly hit-and-run crash that involved six vehicles in Denver early Monday morning has been identified.
The crash happened just outside Ernie’s Bar near the intersection of West 44th Avenue and Federal Boulevard.
The driver of the SUV believed to have caused the crash has been identified as 25-year-old Ricardo Gardea.
Police say he ran from the scene but was arrested a short time later. He is facing vehicular homicide charges.
A Jeep was heavily damaged after it burst into flames on the road at the crash scene. The driver of the Jeep, identified as Sebastian Evridge, 21, later died at a hospital. A passenger in the Jeep was also injured and hospitalized. That person’s name and condition haven’t been released.
A Mountain View Police officer told Denver Police that Gardea was speeding before the crash at more than 100 miles per hour in a white Dodge Durango. The officer initially tried to stop the suspect but realized he couldn’t safely make the stop and lost sight of the SUV. A short time later the officer saw smoke billowing into the air.
Mountain View police oversee the Denver suburban area close to where the accident happened.
According to police, the Durango may have ran a red light creating the collision that sent the Jeep into flames.
