Mount Evans Road Reopens After Construction Project

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Mount Evans Road finally reopened to traffic after a several month roadway stabilization project that kept the road closed above Lincoln Lake.

Mount Evans is considered one of Colorado's most scenic tourist destinations. Also known as State Highway 5, is the highest paved road in the nation. It starts at Echo Lake and ascends to Summit Lake, then continues on to the summit of the 14,264 foot mountain.

Last year the highway closed for the season in September. This year, the Colorado Department of Transportation will extend the opening to the top until what they call the first significant snowfall. CDOT said they wanted visitors to have extra time to enjoy the view.

For the next two weeks CDOT will continue roadwork Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. near mile marker 6.5 of the nearly 15-mile long roadway. During this time one lane will remain open with flaggers alternating motorists in each direction. Over the weekend the roadway will be completely open in both directions.
