Bikes Being Stolen At An Alarming Rate In Boulder

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) - Police say about one million dollars worth of bikes are stolen each year in Boulder, and that number is going up.

In a community full of bicycle enthusiasts, police say bikes are being stolen at an alarming rate. Police are currently working to identify some suspects in unrelated bike thefts all over the city.

Already this year 410 bikes have been swiped in compared to 728 in all of last year. According to Sgt. Andrew Kirshbaum, that's put Boulder on pace for a 13 percent increase.

"Most of the time, if the bike is locked, our thieves are cutting the lock and then riding away on the bicycle," Kirshbaum said.

"The truth of the matter is, if a thief wants your bike, they're probably going to get it," said Brandon Dwight, cofounder of Boulder Cycle Sport.

Dwight says the best way to prevent bike theft is to keep it in view, and inside your home when you're not using it.

"Bikes are expensive nowadays. So you wouldn't leave your fancy jewelry in the garage unattended, so with your bike you should do that as well," Dwight said.

Police say it's safest to use an all steel U-lock because it's harder for thieves to cut. They also recommend registering bikes with the police department.
