He's gotten used to life without a mom at home, at his football games. And to life without his grandmother, too. Both of them were sent to prison when Thomas was young on drug-related charges.

But things changed last week.

President Barack Obama commuted the jail sentence of Katina Smith. Smith, Thomas's mom, will be released from prison in November.

In an interview with CBS4 on Saturday at his football camp for kids, Thomas said it's going to be hard for her his mother to adjust to life outside of a jail cell, but he's excited.

"Inside it's different. They've got rules," Thomas said. "It's going to be something different. She's going to have to get used to it. And I'm going to have to get used to it. ... but I'm so happy."

Thomas says he had been given some advanced notice that there was a chance mom might be released soon, but he learned the news in a phone call from Smith herself on Monday morning.

"I'm about ready to go to work out," he said. "She called me and said 'I got good news. Obama just got 46 people he's gonna let come home soon.' And I was like 'Are you one of them?' "

"It was like joy and it was emotion at the same time. I really didn't know what to do. I was so happy," Thomas said. "And like relief."

"It's been 15 years and she's finally coming home and she's finally going to see me play a football game."

Thomas says he's now hoping his grandmother will get released soon as well.
