Police: Woman Ran Over Boyfriend With Her Car

LEADVILLE, Colo. (CBS4)- A Leadville woman remains behind bars after she allegedly ran over her boyfriend with her car, killing him. It's the first case of first-degree murder in the mountain community in nearly two decades.

The last case of first-degree murder in Lake County was in 1999. Violent crime is so rare in the community that most police officers on the force have never been involved in a homicide case before this month.

"Riding in the car together they had a verbal confrontation, she told him to get out of the car and then ran him over," said Leadville Police Department spokeswoman Betty Benson.

Investigators say Maria Day intentionally struck her boyfriend, John Alexander Martinez, on Chestnut Street in Leadville on July 8.

The 911 call provides some graphic details about the crime.

Caller: "There's a guy lying in the road. He doesn't even look alive, man."

"She left him lying in the street for a period of time and then came back," said Benson.

Martinez died from injuries related to the incident about 8:45 p.m. that same evening.

Day was arrested in her car.

Bail for Day was initially set for $15,000 but was revoked with the filing of more serious charges. Day remains in custody in Summit County without bond. Lake County does not have a jail for females.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 5 in Leadville.
