E.Coli Closes North Lake Park Swim Beach In Loveland
LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4)- High levels of E. coli have closed the North Lake Park Swim Beach in Loveland.
Park officials closed the swim beach on Tuesday after tests showed levels of E. coli bacteria that exceeded state-mandated limits.
The water at the beach will be retested on Tuesday. Those results should be available on Wednesday morning that may allow the beach to be reopened.
A Parks and Recreation Department lifeguard remained on duty at the beach but closure signs have been posted.
The Loveland Parks and Recreation Department has notified Larimer County and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment about the water quality tests and closure as required.
Parks and Recreation officials said E. coli has occurred in the past at the beach when conditions in the reservoir change with fluctuating water flows and temperatures. The reservoir is owned by the Greeley-Loveland Irrigation Company.
Loveland officials said E. coli is an organism that has been known to cause illness in humans and is most often attributed to fecal material in the water, usually from livestock sources.
The source of the E. coli has not been determined.
