AURORA, Colo. (AP/CBS4) - Democratic state Sen. Morgan Carroll will challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman for Colorado's 6th Congressional District.

The Aurora Democrat announced her candidacy Tuesday for a district both parties consider a toss-up because of its large bloc of unaffiliated voters. But Coffman has proven to be a formidable opponent, fending off his two previous opponents with ease.

The 6th District encompasses the suburbs north, east, and south of Denver with its largest population center in Aurora. The district was historically a GOP stronghold until it was redrawn before the 2012 elections.

Carroll is the Democrat's leader in the state Senate. She served in the state House before that.

"I worked in gas stations, I worked in pizza delivery, I worked in fast food and tried very hard to save money so I might be able to go to college," Carroll said in a video posted on the Internet. "I know what it was like to work for minimum wage, I know what it was like to work without having any kind of benefits, any kind of access to health care."

Carroll says if she wins the seat she'll take a "get it done" approach to Congress.
