Task Force Searches Area Around Loveland Airport After Tip On Random Shootings

LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4/AP) - Authorities searched an area near the Fort Collins-Loveland Airport as part of the investigation into a series of apparently random roadside shootings in northern Colorado.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office says an evidence recovery team went to the 6800 block of County Road 9 Thursday morning to follow up on leads from previous tips.

Authorities kept media far away from the search area. CBS4's Lauren DiSpirito reported that they seem to be searching the west side of property near a dairy farm. At one point DiSpirito witnessed recovery team members on their hands and knees and it looked as if they were digging in the ground.

DiSpirito also witnessed a flat-bed truck be allowed past the road block and go into the scene. There were also tractors moving nearby.

The search wrapped up at approximately 4 p.m. Authorities say they're being strategic about not releasing any information so as to not jeopardize the case.

Last week, about two dozen FBI and members of local law enforcement also searched a park in Loveland as part of the investigation.

Investigators say two nearby shootings weeks apart are linked by evidence but they haven't determined if a fatal June 3 shooting in Loveland is also related.

The Task Force is still fielding tips on a vehicle of interest -- an either GMC or Chevy orange pickup truck.
