Help Take Kids With Cancer To A Rockies Game

DENVER (CBS4) - The Arizona Diamondbacks will be in Denver in September and that's when a local man is going to be taking a group of special children to the game.

It's called the Youth Cancer Baseball Tour and it was set up a few years ago by Greg Durfee, who once lived on skid row in Los Angeles, but now lives in Aurora. Durfee said he was devastated when a friend's nephew died of childhood cancer in 2000.

He wants to do a seven-city tour but needs to raise about $1,000 more.

"This is our fifth year in relationship with the Rockies and they've always been very helpful and very generous," Durfee said. "We have a relationship with Brandon Barns. Last year he got us down onto the field for batting practice and the kids love that, whenever there's interaction with players they love that."

The Youth Cancer Baseball Tour will be taking a group of 25 kids to the Rockies game against the Diamondbacks on Sept. 1.

"Take care of the parking and the food, and for a group of 25 that's about $20 per person, and we don't want to cancel any stops," Durfee said.

Durfee said besides helping out the kids, he's also benefiting.

"It's more than a calling having gone through what I've been through. Being homeless it helps my healing giving back to the community," he said. "But I really love enjoying seeing the families interact. Baseball is a unique sport. We all remember when our dad took us to our first game and some of these kids they've never gone, and it's their bucket list item to do."

There's a fundraiser during the All-Star game on July 14 happening at both A-Town Pizza locations in Aurora. They start at 5 p.m.
