Man Sentenced In Theft Of Injured Police Officer's Car

DENVER (CBS4)- A man accused of stealing a car and personal items that belonged to an injured Denver Police officer was sentenced in connection with that theft.

Emmanuel Gutierrez pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated motor vehicle theft and was sentenced to four years in prison on Monday.

Gutierrez was working at a downtown hotel in December 2014 in the maintenance department when he stole the keys belonging to the family of Officer John Adsit. The car was later found abandoned and Gutierrez was identified as a suspect after he posted the officer's badge for sale online.

Adsit was one of four police officers who were struck while escorting hundreds of East High School students who were marching down East Colfax Avenue for a protest in December 2014. Adsit was severely injured and continues to recover.

Gutierrez will have the opportunity for a sentence reconsideration in November. The judge set a hearing for Nov. 2 to consider changing the four-year prison term to four years probation.
