Thousands Pedal Bike MS To Find A Cure

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4)- Thousands hopped on a bicycle on Saturday morning to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. The riders pedaled from Westminster to Fort Collins and back over two days as part of Bike MS.

The disease, an unpredictable disease of the nervous system, has one of the highest numbers of new diagnosis in Colorado.

"When I was first diagnosed I didn't even own a bicycle," said Bike MS rider Beth Leleck. "I lost my hearing in my ear, that was the first sign of my diagnosis."

Ever since that day, Leleck has been fighting for a cure.

"This is my favorite weekend of the entire year," said Leleck about Bike MS. She is one of thousands of cyclists hitting the road for the 30th annual Bike MS.

"Bike MS is a two-day, 150-mile excursion," said Carrie Nolan, President of the Colorado and Wyoming Chapter of the National MS Society. "It is a remarkable commitment from our community and I say, 'Thanks!'"

Nolan said all that pedaling really pays off, "We are on our way to raise $4 million this year."

Money raised will go to help those living with MS and their families, as well as new treatment plans.

"This society is right now funding 380 research projects and our budget this year is $52 million," said Nolan.

"Riding is fun, it's great to be out with all our friends but ultimately it's about raising money," said one Bike MS rider.

CBS4 is a proud sponsor of Bike MS on June 27 and 28.
