Push To Get More Money From Federal Government For Roads, Bridges

DENVER (CBS4)- Local and state leaders met with Sen. Michael Bennet to make a plea for more infrastructure support from the federal government to avoid making every new road a tollway.

The group gathered on Friday near the construction project at Interstate 25 and 6th Avenue. The $100 million project used some federal funding but there is an effort to receive more funding from Capitol Hill in Colorado.

"Given the lack of an appetite for gas tax increases and funding increases, if we're going to add capacity we're going to have to toll it because that is the only way we can raise revenue," said Colorado Department of Transportation Executive Director Shailen Bhatt.

"If you delay fixing a road or fixing a bridge, that tomorrow or next year is going to be more expensive to fix, it's just more expensive," said Bennet.

Bennet said he would like to see a six year infrastructure bill but admits it will be difficult to get through Congress.
