Colorado Leaders React To Landmark Supreme Court Decision On Same-Sex Marriage

DENVER (CBS4) - In a landmark decision the United States Supreme Court has overturned the ban on same sex marriage.

This makes same sex marriages legal in all 50 states.

Justices voted five to four in favor of marriage equality.

Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat, issued a statement about the ruling saying in part:

"Today's historic decision affirms one of our country's most basic values that every American is equal under the law and deserves the same rights as everyone else."

Rep. Mike Coffman, a Republican, shared the following comment:

"The world is changing... It is time we move forward and focus on the big debates of our day how to keep our country safe and get Americans back to work.

Rep. Jared Polis, a Democrat who is also gay and married with children, issued this comment:

"The Court ruled in no uncertain terms that the bonds of love, commitment, and responsibility that all our families share exist without regard to gender and deserve the dignity of being recognized under the law," said Rep. Jared Polis, a Democrat who is also gay and married with a child.

Same-sex couples in Colorado have been getting married legally statewide since October. At that time, the Supreme Court effectively made same-sex marriage legal in Colorado and five other states by declining to hear the appeals of same-sex marriage in the 10th Circuit, which includes Colorado.

The Attorney General at the time, John Suthers instructed county clerks to begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses shortly afterwards.

Civil Unions were legalized in Colorado in 2013.
