Newly-Trained Firefighters From Colorado Headed To Alaska
DENVER (CBS4)- A dozen newly-trained firefighters from Colorado prepared to deploy to Alaska.
The firefighters will be gone for two weeks on an assignment to help prevent wildfires.
In the past week, more than 50 veterans from across the nation have trained to become qualified wildland firefighters thanks to a federal partnership to put veterans to work. It's part of a federal partnership that will help build up the national firefighting resources.
"Everybody is really excited. It's a great opportunity for them. There are a lot of firefighters who wait a long time to go up to Alaska and these guys are getting their first assignment and going up to Alaska," said crew representative Beau Kidd.
At least one of the firefighters being deployed is from Leadville.
The training sessions included classroom instruction and field experience to enable the firefighters to receive their Type-2 Firefighter certification.
