Suspect In Carjacking, Chase Captured In Castle Rock

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) - The suspect in Monday's carjacking and wild chase in the Denver metro area is under arrest.

Denver police say Joshua Lane, 35, was captured at a 7-Eleven convenience store near Interstate 25 and Plum Creek Parkway in Castle Rock at 7:45 a.m. Lane was sleeping inside a stolen truck parked outside the store when police surrounded it so quietly, they didn't wake him.

The incident started Monday morning at a Denver parking garage near the intersection of Lincoln Street and East Tennessee Avenue. That's where a man confronted the apparent car thief and was stabbed.

That man's injuries are minor, but Lane stole his truck, a Toyota Tacoma. That Tacoma was spotted at numerous locations through the day on Monday and even pursued by police.

"He was spotted from Lakewood to Aurora. Aurora had two pursuits with him. Lakewood spotted him. Citizens followed him for a short distance. He drove all over town," said Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

One of the pursuits ended with a three-vehicle accident involving an Aurora police patrol car.

A woman in one of the cars involved was hurt but is expected to recover.

"When I pulled up there was cops everywhere. And the helicopter was circling and there was police tape. There was a lot of action going on," said Jim Allen, who was in the area after one of the crimes.

Earlier that day, the Tacoma nearly sideswiped Leonard Berndt.

"All of a sudden this truck just comes up behind me, just flies by me," said Berndt.

Lane will be extradited from Castle Rock to Denver where the district attorney will determine charges.

"Castle Rock did a great job of going in and arresting this person without incident," said Jackson.
