Greeley Police Shot & Killed Man They Say Had Gun

GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4) — Police in Greeley investigated a deadly shooting involving an officer early Friday morning. Police say the man had a gun.

Police rushed to a home about 6:30 a.m. in the 600 block of 15th Avenue Court after receiving a call about a woman found at a door who was bleeding.

"She had blood on her neck and on her hand, something bad had happened to her, she was white and cold and gasping for air," said neighbor and witness Guy Hathaway.

Hathaway barely had time to call for help for his neighbor who was lying hurt, outside his home, when he said her husband began walking across the street toward them while holding a gun.

"There was nothing we could do but run for shelter," said Hathaway.

At that point Hathaway told CBS4's Lauren DiSpirito he didn't know how the woman had been hurt or why her husband was holding a gun.

When police arrived, they found a man in the middle of the street with a handgun. Officers said when they ordered the man to drop the gun, he refused and they shot him. The man died at the hospital.

"He refused to take their orders and kept doing weird things with the gun, as if maybe to kill himself, but he would not put it down. Police fired until he hit the ground," said Hathaway.

Neighbor Mary Balderas and her son Devin woke up not knowing which directions the gunshots were headed.

"My foot hit the ground on the first gunfire, you know, 'cause I didn't know," said Balderas. "It's pretty shocking that is happened so close to me, it tells me I have to be more safe around here."

The woman who was found bleeding was taken to North Colorado Medical Center for surgery.

The officers were not injured. The Weld County District Attorney's Office has taken over the investigation into what happened leading up to the shooting.
