Colorado Lawmaker Calls For Letters, Service At AME Churches

DENVER (AP) — A Colorado state lawmaker is urging white people to leave notes of thanks and support on the doors of AME church across the country.

State Sen. Michael Johnston left a note of his own on the door of the Shorter AME Church in Denver in the middle of the night Thursday. He says he wanted it to be the first thing the pastor and others saw in the morning after the shooting in Charleston.

He thanked the church for standing for unconditional love and relentless forgiveness and said its members don't stand alone in their grief.

On his Facebook page, Johnston encouraged others to stop by an AME church, perform a quiet act of service and leave a note of thanks and tweet about it under the hashtag Onlylovecandothat, borrowing a line from Martin Luther King, Jr.
