Would-Be Burglar Uses Landscaping Tool To Break Window

DENVER (CBS4) - A man suspected of attempting to break into several homes in a downtown Denver neighborhood was caught on surveillance camera.

The burglar used whatever he could find, in this case the spray nozzle on the end of a garden hose.

Denver police issued an alert several months ago warning homeowners that burglars will use whatever they can get their hands on to get into a house.

Home security cameras show a would-be burglar in the act, stalking around a couple's yard in broad daylight, looking for a way to get inside.

"He is looking around for something to break the window, and we find that he picks up the water nozzle from our hose," said the homeowner of the targeted house.

She and her fiancé were at home when the stranger eventually broke through a back window, only to be scared off by someone walking by.

Before he tried to get in through the window, the homeowner says he showed up on their front porch.

"I heard the doorbell ring. I kind of peeked out my window, didn't see anything, didn't see anybody," she said.

In this case a neighbor saw what was happening before it was too late.

Police now believe this same suspect stopped by several homes on the same street.

Theirs was the only one with damage, and the only one with cameras recording.

"It was kind of a shock actually seeing it happen...in motion," said the homeowner.

Police are now hoping someone will recognize the man in the video, and are offering a $2000 reward for information that helps lead to an arrest. You can call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP.
