Youth Football Program Relieved After Stolen Equipment Trailer Is Found

LAFAYETTE, Colo. (CBS4) - A youth football program thought it was out $115,000 after their equipment trailer was stolen in Boulder County, but police on Monday found the trailer still loaded with the gear.

The Lafayette Bobcats said they went to do their annual inventory only to find the trailer was gone from its storage yard. The trailer contains all of the gear such as helmets, shoulder pads, pants, jerseys and other field equipment.

The league's president, D.J. Guildner, said he was devastated when he heard the news.

"I was sick to my stomach. It made me sick. It made me sad. It made me angry that someone would do something like this," Guildner said.

They suspect the trailer may have been stolen sometime last month. On Monday police found it after getting a call from Marine recruiter Keith Carter who saw the story on TV and then spotted the trailer. Carter is the son-in-law of a coach in the program.

The trailer was found in a Westminster Applebee's parking lot at 92nd Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. None of the equipment seems to be missing but the license plates were stolen.

Guildner told CBS4 he was happy the trailer was found.

"This is a huge relief and I just thank everybody who came together and made this happen," he said.

Since the trailer was reported missing, a GoFundMe page was created and about $4,600 was raised. Guildner said the board will discuss what to do with the money. They might try to talk to GoFundMe about returning it or perhaps buying updated equipment or donating the money to charity.
