Wild Shootout Between Police, Suspect Under Investigation

NORTHGLENN, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Northglenn exchanged gunfire with a suspect on Wednesday after someone called 911 and reported seeing a man walking around with a handgun.

Late Wednesday night police were continuing to investigate the incident, which left the suspect injured with undisclosed injuries.

At 3:15 p.m. someone called 911 saying a young man in his 20s was walking around with a handgun.

When police arrived at the 11100 block of Huron Street they confronted the man in an open space area next to an apartment building.

"When officers approached the subject he displayed a handgun and opened fire on our officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect. The officers were uninjured," said Northglenn police spokesman Cmdr. Ian Lopez.

The suspect was hit several times and the exchange of gunfire went on for several minutes. The suspect was then placed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

Neighbor Tricia Mentor-Swanson said she heard the chaotic sounds.

"I heard the three 'Pop' sounds. They were muffly. And then I heard a barrage of just sharp burst sounds. It was like 'bap, bap, bap, bap, bap, bap, bap, bap,' and then and it just kept going. And then it stopped for a second, and then it happened all over again," she told CBS4.

Police closed off the area where the shots were fired for hours after the shooting, and late Wednesday night they were still at the scene and focused on an area in the open space that they covered with pop up tents.

One woman told CBS4 she was a few steps away from the shootout. She was in the apartment building's driveway, on the other side of the fence from the open space. Some bullet holes that penetrated the fence were visible afterwards.
