State Parole Officer Shoots, Injures Man In Apartment

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Aurora are investigating a shooting involving parole officers with the Colorado Department of Corrections.

The shooting happened Monday morning at the Monte Vista apartments at the intersection of Emporia Street and Montview Boulevard.

A man was allegedly armed inside the apartment of a parolee when two Corrections officers came to that apartment on a home visit. The man -- who was apparently visiting the parolee -- then confronted the officers with a gun.

At that point police said one officer shot the man.

"They entered the apartment and were confronted by an armed man. A shot was fired by one of the parole officers and an adult man was struck," Sgt. Chris Amsler said. "The person that was shot was not the parolee that the parole officers were visiting this morning."

"I just heard a shot," said neighbor Dee Mars, who said she was surprised by the sound.

No officers were injured, and the parolee who lives at the apartment was not hurt.

The man who was shot was taken to the hospital. He underwent surgery and was listed in serious condition at University of Colorado Hospital.

No one who was involved in the incident has been identified. It's also not clear if the parolee might face some sort of charges in the case. Police say depending on the conditions of the parole, the parolee could be in more trouble for having an armed guest in his house.

Residents told CBS4 there are several parolees living at the apartment building who are enrolled in a program that pays for their rent. The parolees enrolled can only be non-violent offenders.
