Police Say Fatal Shooting In Loveland Stemmed From A Longstanding Feud

LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4) - Police and SWAT teams had to be used to try and save a man's life and get a suspect to surrender after a shooting in Loveland in the middle of the day Saturday.

Police rushed to 5600 block of Thomas Court in Loveland at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday where they found one man who was wounded outside the residence where he died a short time later.

Officers took Eric David Gray, 36, into custody.

Neighbors say the victim, whose name hasn't been released, and the suspect have been fighting for a long time over land at the end of a cul-de-sac.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office says deputies put their lives on the line to try and rescue the victim who was still alive at the time.

Neighbors told CBS4 they heard one shot and raced for cover, and even grabbed the victim's wife to protect her. They hid until the suspect was in custody.

A neighbor told CBS4 the victim doesn't live on cul-de-sac but does own a house there. He was there on Saturday cleaning it up with his wife because the house is for sale. Neighbors say the area between homes has been the source of a longstanding feud.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office said on Sunday the shooting was about neighbors not being able to communicate appropriately and "engaging a mediator to help reduce tensions and de-escalate disagreements is always preferred to avoid such tragic results."

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office stresses that they believe the property dispute is an independent case and not at all linked to the rash of unsolved shootings going on in Northern Colorado.
