The Catch That Wasn't: Some Losses Sting Worse Than Others

DENVER (CBS4) - Everybody thought he caught it -- but the ball actually grazed Charlie Blackmon's glove as it dropped over the wall. That was the difference between a game-winning catch and a game-winning grand slam Tuesday night at Coors Field.

Alex Guerrero hit a grand slam off reliever Rafael Betancourt with two outs in the top of the ninth to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 9-8 lead over the Rockies. The Dodgers held on in the bottom of the ninth for the win, avoiding a sweep in the doubleheader.

It might be a while before the Rockies get that one of out of their system, but there are 162 games in a season and it was just one game. However, players admit some losses hurt a little bit more than others.

"It's always really tough when you lose a game like the way we lost last night, but you've just got to continue to play the game," outfielder Carlos Gonzalez said on Wednesday. "You can't just sit here and think about it all day, it's already in the past -- you know, grand slam with two strikes in the ninth inning with two outs is something you don't see very often. It is what it is -- it's over."

"It was a tough one, to have a lead like that, especially off (Zack) Greinke, who is one of the best pitchers in the game, to come back off him and get the lead late. To lose that game, it stings a little extra," shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. "But the good thing about baseball is you get a chance to redeem yourself real quick. You don't have days off to where you sit there and think about it. So tonight is another opportunity and hopefully we'll make the most of it."

The Rockies were dealt another loss before even taking the field on Wednesday. The team announced starting pitch Jordan Lyles will have season-ending toe surgery.
