Day Care In Arvada Closes Doors Without Notice, Parents Upset

ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4)- The parents of some children who attend the Legacy Learning Center in Arvada are frustrated and want answers after a note was taped to the front door last week, alerting them that the day care was closed.

The parents didn't know the center would be closing until they turned up to drop off their children for the day on May 27.

"There was a note on the front door stating that the center was closed due to unforeseen circumstances and they would open the next day," said parent Tori Coronado.

The former director of Legacy Learning Center said 50 children attend the day care.

She did not want to be identified but said she and 10 staff members walked out last week because of ongoing issues with the owners.

On May 26 the Department of Human Services received a complaint from a staff member at Legacy Learning Center, claiming the employees had resigned at the close of business because they had not been paid and were paying for food and supplies for the children out of their own pockets.

The state department said they investigated those claims but found no violations.

Coronado said while the locked doors were a surprise, she expected the owners would have reached out to parents by now.

"It was frustrating that none of us have been notified. We still haven't been notified," said Coronado. "There was a post on the Facebook page by the owner or the management stating that they were opening Monday, this past Monday, sorry for the inconvenience 'coz' caused by our staff."

Coronado said regardless of why the school closed, she expected the owners to be more professional and considerate of the families who trusted them with their children.

"'Oh, I'm sorry... Let's reimburse your money' or 'Let's see if we can find you another form of childcare in the meantime while we wait to open our doors' and they still have yet to be opened," said Coronado.

The Legacy Learning Center's owner, Sharjeel Hassan, did not return CBS4 calls for comment.

The Department of Human Services said the owner has indicated he plans to reopen the day care once the qualified staff has been hired.
