'Walk For Israel' Focuses On Pride, Not Politics

DENVER (CBS4) - This year Israel celebrates 67 years of statehood, and on Sunday thousands celebrated that milestone in Denver.

Clad in in blue and white more than 1,500 walkers from Colorado's Jewish community came together Sunday for the 2015 Walk for Israel.

"Israel and the U.S. have so many things that we share in common," a participant said.

"Sometimes it's important to understand that we are coming from the same place," another said.

"Look around and see how many different aspects of our incredible Jewish population are represented," an organizer told the participants.

Organizers say it's a time to put politics aside and put the focus on the country itself and its relationship with the U.S.

"We have over 70 students traveling to Israel. I think this is one of the largest IST groups ever," an organizer said.

Money raised benefits Jewish Colorado, which helps Colorado's Jewish community through outreach programs and in times of need. Organizers say while Israel may be far from Colorado, the support sent from the state will benefit a country helping to spread democracy and human rights in the Middle East.

"It's important to have in the Middle East a country that really shares the same value as the amazing United States of America," a participant said.
