Young Talent Recognized On National Missing Children's Day

DENVER (CBS4)- Wednesday is National Missing Children's Day, a day set aside to raise awareness of the thousands of children reported missing in the U.S. each year. One local elementary student was recognized for her commitment to the cause.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation presented an award to Brooklyn Tucker, a 5th grader at the Aurora Global Academy, who won a statewide poster contest in recognition of National Missing Children's Day.

She received a gift bag and recognition at the state Capitol.

"Today I drew a poster of missing children being home with their family. And the heart represents that they love each other, the family represents that she's home with her family and the house represents that she is home," said Tucker.

Parents are urged to discuss with their children the risks they face from abductors, online predators and other criminals.

In Colorado, there were 262 kids reported missing in Colorado in 2014.

Additional Information From The CBI:

The CBI is asking parents and caregivers to "Take 25" and talk with their kids about personal safety issues. While child abductions represent only a small portion of the missing children statistics, the Take 25 resource remains an important tool for parents and caregivers.

"Take 25" is a national effort through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) that encourages parents to spend 25 minutes with their children to talk about risks they face from abductors, online predators and other criminals. Visit www.take25.org for more information.
