Driver Accused In Deadly State Patrol Crash Appears In Court

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- The driver accused in a crash that killed a Colorado State Patrol cadet and critically injured another trooper appeared in court on Wednesday morning.

Christopher Gebers was advised of the charges he is facing during the Wednesday morning hearing in Boulder County Court.

Gebers, 27, of Federal Heights, was arrested after a crash on Highway 66 in Longmont Saturday. Investigators say he took off from a traffic stop, engaging police in a chase that ended in the crash.

Gebers struck Colorado State Patrol Trooper Cadet Taylor Thyfault and Trooper Clinton Rushing. Thyfault, 21, was killed and Rushing was seriously injured while trying to put spikes in the road to stop the car driven by Gebers.

Gebers allegedly swerved to miss the sticks and hit the trooper. Police say Gebers then lost control and struck the cadet. Gebers claimed his emergency brake locked up and the accelerator was stuck.

Gebers was advised of the charges he faces in court Wednesday, including first-degree murder, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license. He is scheduled for the formal filing of charges on June 1. He remains in custody without bond.

Memorial services for Thyfault are being referred to as a "Celebration of Life" and have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the Flatirons Community Church, 355 W. South Boulder Road in Lafayette.

The public has been invited to sign the online guest book at Ellis Family Services.
