Witnesses Act Immediately After Man Drives Straight Into Loveland Lake

LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4) - A driver had to be rescued from Lake Loveland Wednesday afternoon.

For some reason the driver, a 72-year-old Loveland man, drove right into the south shore of the lake.

People who witnessed it jumped in to help, including one woman who says she saw a problem with the rescue, so she jumped in.

"They were so busy trying to get him from underneath the steering wheel that they forgot to lift his head up," the woman said. "So when I saw his head under the water the whole time I jumped in to hold his head up while they were able to get him out from under the steering wheel.

"But they had to break the window and everything … to get in the car."

Five people had to be treated for hypothermia by medics on the scene. The driver was transported to a hospital. His condition hasn't been released.

Loveland Fire Rescue Authority Special Operations Team said they put divers in the water to check to see if any other people were in the vehicle.

"Authorities later confirmed with the driver that no other people were in the vehicle," Loveland Fire Rescue said in a statement.

It's believed the driver suffered some kind of medical event. He won't be cited for the incident.
