Friends Of Cyclist Who Was Gunned Down Say They're Scared

WINDSOR, Colo. (CBS4) - Friends and coworkers of a bicycle rider who was shot and killed on the side of a rural road in Windsor say they are scared and want answers.

Authorities say John Jacoby may have been a victim of road rage or a random shooting.

Police have not released a suspect description and have not made any arrests.

Jacoby, 48, had been employed with the city of Windsor since 2012. Police say he was riding his bike along the rural road at approximately 10 a.m. on Monday when something happened.

He was shot twice and was found dead in a ditch next to the roadway.

It happened near the intersection of Weld County Road 72 and Weld County Road 15. Initially police thought it was a hit-and-run case.

The crime was the first homicide in the town in eight years.

"For Windsor, it's very unusual," said Windsor Police Lieutenant Rich Higuera.

"It's like, crazy. He was just here yesterday. And the next day he's just gone," said Anthony Braun, who worked with Jacoby for two years at a King Soopers grocery store.

"He's a straight up guy."

Coworker Tom Carter said Jacoby was part of a cycling community in northern Colorado that's tightly knit.

"He rides back and forth to work quite a bit," Carter said. "It's terrible. You don't want to see anybody go at all but when it's closer to your own community and in the cycling world it hits that much closer to home."

Carter said he wants answers.

"Who did it? Why are they doing this kind of thing? It is the same guy that's been picking off cars? Is it a copycat? It's frightening."

Carter was referring to a series of recent crimes in northern Colorado in which windows of vehicles have apparently been shot out.
