Boy Who Fell Out Of RTD Bus Window On I-70 Was Told To 'Sit Down' Numerous Times

DENVER (CBS4) - A young boy is recovering after falling out the window of a Regional Transportation District bus on the interstate Sunday morning.

The bus was exiting Interstate 70 at Airport Boulevard shortly after 9 a.m. when a 4-year-old passenger on board hit the pavement. Police say the boy was standing up on the seat playing with the latch when the window burst open and he tumbled out.

"The mother had told the boy to sit down numerous times and he was just being a typical 4-year-old boy," Lt. Michael McClelland with the Aurora Police Department said. "The driver that was behind the bus said that all she saw was a yellow shirt, and it bounced on the ground, and it rolled, and next thing she knows the boy is up and running away."

The bus was traveling at approximately 35 to 40 miles per hour when the child fell out.

The boy was rushed to Children's Hospital where emergency staff treated him for head trauma. The emergency room physician said the boy didn't suffer any serious injuries.

It was an accident McClelland hopes will teach a lesson.

"I told him that he needs to, especially on Mother's Day, he needs to listen to his mom, and when she says, 'Sit down and don't play with the window,' sit down and don't play with the window," he said.

Police are not filing any charges at this time against the mother, who's from Anchorage, Alaska. They say it's an important reminder keep children seated at all times while riding on public transportation.
