Bicyclists Get Ready To Pedal On 16th Street Mall On Weekends

DENVER (CBS4)- Bicyclists can pedal to their heart's delight along the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver on weekends thanks to a change of heart by the city council.

An ordinance change approved by the Denver City Council last week allows people to ride bikes on the 16th Street Mall transit way on Saturdays and Sundays.

"Denver continues to expand mobility options for people to get around our downtown core with ease," said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock in a statement. "By allowing bikes on the transit way on both Saturday and Sunday, we support efforts to activate the 16th Street mall and create a more vibrant, healthy, and livable city."

Bicyclists are urged to be aware they are sharing the transit way with RTD shuttle buses. Cyclists are urged to be mindful of all traffic laws and are banned from riding on the sidewalk unless they are mounting or dismounting to park.

Denver Public Works has installed signage on the mall to indicate the new rules. A celebration is planned for June to officially announce the change.
