DPS Apologizes For Online Parent Portal Collapse

DENVER (CBS4) - Parents are frustrated after the Denver Public School online portal, intended to make things easier, failed Thursday evening.

The Parent Portal is an online system families were supposed to use in order to register a child for both before and after school activities with Kaleidoscope Corner. Based on first come, first served, when the hour came to register, parents found that the portal did not work.

A DPS employee told one parent the entire system crashed at 4 p.m. Thursday. Current families with DPS could register for the Kaleidoscope program beginning at 4 p.m. New families had to wait until 6 p.m. Neither current nor new families could register online, which caused hundreds to scramble.

There was an in-person option to register for the program. Parents could travel in person to a designated school site and turn in several pages of paperwork, filled out by hand.

The before and after school program with DPS is considered very competitive and dozens of parents line up, many for hours, before the designated time. The online option was designed to avoid that situation.

Several parents rushed to a nearby designated school site once the online option failed, to try to register in person.

Dozens reportedly gathered at DPS headquarters Thursday night to voice the problem.

DPS has apologized to families, and asks those who have not yet turned in an application to bring it directly to their program site or the Acoma Street office by Friday, May 15.

All registration fees for the 2015-2016 Kaleidoscope program were waived for both current and new DPS families.
