Police: Students Brought Pot, Alcohol To Skinner Middle School

DENVER (CBS4)- Marijuana edibles were the focus of an investigation after some students became sickened at Skinner Middle School on Thursday afternoon. Five students were involved in bringing marijuana and alcohol on campus and consuming it.

Police responded to the school about 2:20 p.m. on reports that some students became ill. Pot edibles were investigated as the possible cause of the illness.

Witnesses said the students had sneaked the drugs and alcohol into the school in a backpack and then consumed them in one of the bathrooms inside the school.

Police tweeted out their response to the situation.

A Denver Paramedics van was parked near the school about 2:30 p.m. Thursday as part of a larger response.

"In the climate we're in we can't afford to take any nonchalant responses to these things," said Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

One student was transported to the hospital in an ambulance that left the middle school at the parent's request.

"The other students were released to their parents. One student was cited for bringing marijuana to school," said Jackson.

One student was cited with having marijuana on the campus, minor in possession of alcohol and unlawful acts on school property.

School officials were notified by a student who told them what he saw.

"The kids did the right thing again. The students stepped up, the students notified them that some other kids possibly had marijuana and alcohol on campus, they notified the faculty, the faculty took action right away, they contacted the students, they checked the lockers, they located a small amount of marijuana and some alcohol in a locker," said Jackson.

A letter was sent home to parents of students and also posted online that detailed the events regarding the marijuana brought to school. The school also asked parents to be vigilant with their children on drug and alcohol abuse.

Police are investigating who may have helped the students obtain the marijuana and alcohol.

"These kids, they get it, they're doing the right thing, they're speaking up... they see something, they say something," said Jackson.

Police recently conducted an investigation at Skinner Middle School last month after officers arrested three students for allegedly bringing two guns and a smoke device to campus.

The school was evacuated at that time. No one was injured.
