Theater Shooting Trial Resumes; Testimony Focuses On Phone

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — The trial of Aurora theater gunman James Holmes has resumed with testimony about a call made from his cellphone to the University of Colorado hospital moments before the 2012 attack.

The testimony Monday was mostly technical, in contrast to emotional accounts from victims last week.

Defense attorney Katherine Spengler said the call made from Holmes' phone was to a hospital hotline. But Kelly O'Connor, the hospital's director of information technology, testified it was made to the main number.

A recording played during court included an operator answering but no response from the caller.

Holmes is charged with killing 12 people and injuring 70 others. His attorneys acknowledge he was the shooter but he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosecutors say Holmes was sane. They say he should be convicted and executed.
