Walk MS: 10,000+ People March To Find Cure

DENVER (CBS4)- More than 10,000 people filled City Park in Denver to walk to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis for Walk MS on Saturday morning.

Patti and her daughter Devan were among those walking for the cause. Just last month they received some life-changing news-- Devan, 20, has MS.

"I lost dexterity in my hands, I couldn't type for my job," said Devan.

The pair and a team of friends and family are hitting the ground running, and walking, towards a cure.

"I want to walk... I actually want to run," said Devan.

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the nerve lining, called myelin.

"Once that myelin is gone, our nerves are exposed and it causes all kinds of different symptoms," said Walk MS board member Darrin Johnson.

Johnson was diagnosed eight years ago with MS.

"I'm doing fairly well but there are many who aren't and that's why we need to keep the fight going," said Johnson.

In Colorado, the number of new diagnoses of MS is growing at an alarming rate.

"One in 400 in Colorado are diagnosed with MS and that's the highest rate in the nation," said Johnson.

He said that's why events like Walk MS, the National MS Society of Colorado's biggest fundraiser, are so important.

"The funds provide resources for MS patients and their caregivers," said Johnson.

"The new normal is not something that you can ever anticipate but it is what it is," said Devan.
