Another Murder Has Denver's Cole Neighborhood On Edge

DENVER (CBS4) - Police in Denver are investigating a deadly shooting that happened near a funeral. The gunman has not been caught.

The shooting happened in the 3200 block of Gilpin Street in the Cole neighborhood near the funeral of a homicide victim.

"The suspects fled the scene on foot. We're not sure if they got into a vehicle and left the area," Sonny Jackson with Denver police said.

The shooting was in broad daylight just before noon. Multiple shots were fired and the victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to an area hospital where he died of his injuries.

It happened near the funeral for Abdul Rahim Muhammad, 61, who was gunned down just a few blocks away in a drive-by shooting on April 11. Muhammad was not in a gang.

Police would not confirm if Saturday's shooting was related to Muhammad's death or to gang activity.

"We don't know that at this point in time. We're not going to speculate, we're going to do our investigation and determine what it is exactly that happened. We know right now we have a homicide investigation and we're looking for suspects," Jackson said.

The shooting put the neighborhood on edge. In a statement released Saturday night, Denver police say they have been working over the past several months to address gang violence in the Cole neighborhood.

Gang experts say there is no gang war, calling murders in the Cole and Park Hill areas over the last five weeks individual grudges between gang members. But neighbors feel like they're living in a war zone.
