Power Outage Affects 2,000+ People In Capitol Hill Neighborhood

DENVER (CBS4)- A power outage in the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Denver impacted more than 2,000 people on Saturday night.

Witnesses said the outage was preceded by some sort of explosion underground at 13th and Pennsylvania and that a manhole cover blew off and flames shot eight feet in the air. The explosion happened after 9 p.m. Saturday.

A Denver firefighter on scene told CBS4 that the outage could last for several hours.

Firefighters and Xcel Energy crews are investigating what happened. There have been no reports of any injuries.

The power outage has affected street lights and stop lights in the area for several blocks in each direction of the initial explosion at 13th and Pennsylvania.

The outage impacted restaurants along the 500 block of 17th Avenue and diners had to use their cell phones for light.
