Community Gathers For Fundraiser For Woman Who Lost Unborn Baby In Brutal Attack

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- A community of family and friends gathered at a popular spot in Longmont to raise money and show their support for the woman who was brutally attacked, her unborn baby stolen from her womb.

Michelle Wilkins continues to recover after the stabbing in March. Her suspected attacker is in custody.

"It's not too much just to go grab a beer with a couple of friends and help out," said supporter Gustyn Montoya.

The Oskar Blues Brewery donated 43 percent of its sales on Saturday to support Wilkins, 26, on her path to recovery. There were also special events at the gathering place including a car show and live music.

"I was shocked and appalled at first. I thought it was absolutely tragic that something like that would happen," said Montoya.

"I was shocked," said supporter Matt Saunders, "It was just shocking, almost unbelievable."

The attack still weighs heavily on the heart of Saunders and his family, who came to Oskar Blues specifically to support the fundraiser.

"Anytime there's something in the community that he can help with, he's always stepped up to the plate and I think it's awesome," said Saunders.

"Today is not about politics, it's really about the community getting together and rallying behind her instead of behind the law," said Rep. Jonathan Singer, a Democrat representing Longmont.

"After Michelle was attacked, I really wanted to make sure that people know that the community is rallying around her, and her situation, and first responders, to make sure that she's going to be all right," said Singer.

The crime took place on March 18 at the home of Dynel Lane. Lane, 34, faces attempted murder and assault charges for allegedly stabbing and injuring Wilkins and cutting the baby from her womb and stealing it. The incident happened after Wilkins came to the house apparently to view baby clothes put up for sale on Craigslist.

An autopsy determined the child was not alive after it left its mother's body.
