Actress Says Story Of Apostles Post-Crucifixion In 'The 12' Is 'Rock & Roll'

DENVER (CBS4) - What happened to the 12 apostles and Mary Magdalene after the crucifixion of Jesus? That's the question raised and answered in the world premiere musical "The 12" -- now on stage at the Denver Center.

"The 12" is a new musical treatment of a period of religious history that's really never been explored dramatically, according to Critic at Large Greg Moody.

It explores the time after the death of Christ as the apostles put their lives back together and find their new path.

"This is the untold story. All you mostly hear about is the story of the crucifixion, but not really the depiction of the post crucifixion and how these 12 individuals really suffered," said actress Christina Sajous, who plays Mary Magdalene.

The show is driven forward in two ways, according to Moody. First -- through the drama of the characters finding their way after the loss of their teacher. Second -- through the power of the music.

"It's rock and roll, and there's something about rock and roll that's so explosive," Sajous said. "Rock and roll is also not only … driven by the voice, but driven by the lyrics. And it's important the lyrics are heard, and that they're heard whether you're shouting, or whether you're just speaking the words."

While the show has been compared to what happens just after "Jesus Christ Superstar," this show is different, according to Moody.

"It's smaller, more focused and more deeply emotional," Moody said. "Less flash, more humanity."

"I want the audience to feel the sense of joy, the sense of community, the sense of love, the sense of sacrifice," Sajous said. "Because in my heart I genuinely believe that if we make the choice to love people, love our community, that our world really would be a better place."

"The 12" runs through April 26 in the Stage Theatre of the Denver Performing Arts Complex. For tickets call (303) 893-4100 or visit denvercenter.org..
