Citing Longmont Case, GOP Revives Fetal Homicide Bill
DENVER (AP) - A long-anticipated Colorado bill inspired by the case of a woman accused of cutting open the belly of a pregnant woman and removing her unborn baby girl has been introduced in the state Senate.
The bill would make the killing of a fetus a homicide in certain cases. In the Longmont attack last month, the unborn baby did not survive. But prosecutors have said the law doesn't allow them to charge the accused attacker with homicide.
Colorado voters rejected a fetal homicide law on ballots last year. Previous efforts failed in the state Legislature.
This year's attempt faces little chance. Democrats who control the House say that fetal homicide laws in effect in 38 other states could potentially chip away at abortion rights.
