Native Colorado Performer Brings Cabaret Show To Denver

DENVER (CBS4) Actress Annaleigh Ashford is a native of Colorado, a Tony-nominated performer and newly signed to a CBS comedy pilot called "Super Clyde". But before the new comedy goes into production, Ashford is bringing her cabaret-style show, called "Lost in the Stars," to Denver.

For Ashford coming back to Denver is a walk down memory lane. She grew up in Wheat Ridge and has a dozen or so pictures of the various productions she performed in as she grew up.

"Not only did I get to work as an actor when I was here as a kid, but I also learned from so many incredible performers how to be on-stage and how to be off-stage," Ashford told CBS4.

Ashford currently stars on Broadway in "You Can't Take It With You" opposite James Earl Jones. She was nominated for a Tony Award for her role as Lauren in "Kinky Boots", and she has a regular role as Betty DiMello on Showtime's drama "Masters of Sex." But she calls "Lost In The Stars" a labor of love.

"I really wanted to create a piece that demonstrated the authentic art form of cabaret," Ashford explained.

"Lost In The Stars" is an evening of song with storytelling. Ashford goes from Donna Summer's disco to Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall to an Alanis Morissette sing-a-long – it's an eclectic mix of new and old.

"I end the night with Kurt Weill's 'Lost In The Stars,' which I think is a beautiful song that I want people to be more familiar with," Ashford said.

"Annaleigh Ashford – Lost In The Stars" runs just two nights, April 11 & 12, at the Garner Galleria Theatre. Tickets are on sale now by calling 303-893-4100 or going to denvercenter.org.
