Nuggets May Not Need To Hunt For Next Head Coach

DENVER (CBS4) - How can you not root for Melvin Hunt?

Ever since he took over as interim head coach for the Denver Nuggets the team is fun to watch again. That's probably because they've won more games than they've lost. (The team is 8-7 since Hunt replaced Brian Shaw.)

So what's it going to take for Hunt to win the head coaching job?

"Do you consider yourself a legitimate candidate for this job?" CBS4's Vic Lombardi asked Hunt on Xfinity Monday Live.

"Honestly, I'm not concerned at all. I don't even think about it. I live by daily bread. I'm getting ready for tomorrow's practice," Hunt said. "I don't think that far ahead because I'll mess it up."

Lombardi pointed out that there are some Nuggets fans who are upset that the Nuggets are suddenly winning because it will negatively impact their odds of gettting a high draft pick in the lottery. Their record is currently 28-46.

"How do you respond to that?" Lombardi said.

"Well, use the analytics. The team with the worst record doesn't always get the No. 1 pick. I think there's something to having integrity, playing as hard as you can and competing. I think you owe yourself that as a pro. And I think everything else takes care of itself."

Hunt has found a way to make the most of his situation. We'll see what the organization's front office decides to do at the end of the season.

The Nuggets have eight games left.
