DIA's Blue Mustang Lights To Turn Off For Earth Hour
DENVER (CBS4)- People may find the iconic blue mustang statue outside Denver International Airport a little less intimidating when the red lights inside the eyes are turned off on Saturday.
DIA will participate in the worldwide celebration of Earth Hour on Saturday by turning off several prominent lights, the red eyes on the mustang being among them.
The other lights to be turned off include the illuminated DIA sign along Pena Boulevard and the illuminated sign marking the Jeppesen Terminal.
The airport will first turn the LED sign along eastbound/inbound Peña Boulevard green, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in a symbolic expression of Denver's efforts to work toward a greener city and planet.
The sign, along with an illuminated sign at the entry to the Jeppesen Terminal and the lights that illuminate the mustang statue, will be turned off entirely from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in celebration of Earth Hour. DIA is also encouraging its employees to turn off non-essential lights during Earth Hour.
"Denver International Airport is dedicated to sustainability and Earth Hour provides a visible way to demonstrate that commitment," airport CEO Kim Day said. "Our industry-leading environmental programs continue to expand. Last year, we converted 5,000 garage lights to LEDs; our composting grew to more than 100 tons; we added 2 megawatts of capacity to our solar arrays; and our water bottle filling stations have saved 1.2 million plastic containers since 2013. We hope on Saturday the community reconfirms its commitment along with us, and turns the lights off for an hour."
DIA will also celebrate Earth Day on April 22 with an educational and interactive booth located in the center of the Jeppesen Terminal. Passengers may stop by the booth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to enter contests, receive free gifts and learn more about DIA's commitment to the environment over the past 20 years.
This is the third year DIA will participate in Earth Hour.
