Man's Body Pulled From Pond In Montbello

DENVER (CBS4) - Police are investigating a death in Denver's Montbello neighborhood after a man's body was found in a pond near Chambers Road and East 40th Avenue.

Residents felt uneasy on Saturday afternoon when Denver police discovered a man's body just beside a desolate field.

Neighbors said they knew something was wrong when they saw police swarming the pond, and firefighters later pulled out a body. Denver police have not released much information, which has neighbors even more concerned.

Detectives and the crime scene unit spent hours on the scene but police said it is still unclear if the death was suspicious.

"This is something you expect to find on Forensic Files, so I'm a little bit curious as to what happened," said neighbor Ibukun Akinboyewa.

Despite a recent uptick in violence in Denver that police attribute to gangs, neighbors said this section of Montbello is usually quiet and the field area rarely traveled.

"It's private so nobody really comes over here. If you do they'll you have to leave so that's why I'm like I don't know what happened with that but something happened with it," said neighbor Deandre Casies.

While exactly what happened remains a mystery, neighbors said it's the not knowing that's most frightening.

"Part of it deals with not knowing what happened, and so it begets the question of could it happen to anyone of us and how can we protect ourselves," explained Akinboyewa.

Because this death has not yet been ruled suspicious, police could not speak to whether there is any danger to the public.
