Denver Ranks In Top 10 Hardest Working Cities In America

DENVER (CBS4) - If you ever think you work too hard, it's because you do! America's workers today have a productivity output that is 400% greater than that of the 1950s.

It's not that our grandparents were lazy -- rather, they worked nearly 214 hours more per year than we did in 2010. Our productivity gains largely come from technological advancements, making business more efficient and thereby more productive.

Even so, research shows that Americans work 50% more hours than Europeans. So which cities are the hardest working in America?

WalletHub studied 116 of the most populated cities, using seven key factors to determine the hardest workers. And two Colorado cities fall in the top 20.

Aurora, CO ranks as the 16th hardest working city in America. Its workweek hours average 38.5, and the labor force participation rate is 78.6%.

Still, Aurora isn't working as hard as Denver, which ranked the 9th hardest-working out of 116 cities in the U.S.

The average workweek hours for those in Denver is 38.9 (New York City is 39.2), with a labor force participation rate of 78.5%.

Surprisingly, the powerhouses of NYC, LA, or Chicago weren't number one. The hardest working city in America is apparently Anchorage, Alaska, which averages a 40.7-hour workweek, with a nearly 80% rate of labor force participation.

Good thing the mountains are a drive away for a much-needed escape!
